Extending and Optimizing the rudof SHACL validator

Abstract

This paper extends the rudof SHACL validator to include SHACL-SPARQL constraints, achieving full compliance with the SHACL Core reference test suite. It also details performance optimizations that reduce validation times for large RDF graphs by orders of magnitude. These improvements aim to make rudof an alternative to established SHACL validators. To confirm this, we evaluate its throughput against six established validators across the ICDD and LUBM benchmarks. On LUBM, rudof achieves a 215$ imes$ speedup over its previous version and ranks second overall, behind Jena and RDF4J and ahead of TopBraid. On ICDD, it leads all validators on the smallest building and remains competitive on mid-size cases, while the larger buildings expose the cost of complex SPARQL traversal in the current engine.
